FOI REF: FOI-2023-1285

You asked

Please could you let me know the number of deaths of pedestrians, cyclists and children caused by collision with cars from 2000-2023 where this is mentioned on the death certificate.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics by cause of death for England and Wales only, driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Should you wish to obtain this information for Scotland and Northern Ireland, NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

The number of deaths to pedestrians and cyclists where a collision with a car, pick-up truck or van was mentioned on the death certificate between 2001 and 2023 is available in the associated download named 'Pedestrian and cyclist deaths by year'. Unfortunately, we are unable to supply figures for 2000 due to an incomparable classification change. Please see the notes in the table for more information.

Should you wish to discuss the provision of similar information for 2000 using ICD-9 codes, or for any further information, please contact the Health Analysis and Pandemic Insight (HAPI) Customer Service team at Health.data@ons.gov.uk.
