FOI Ref: FOI/2023/4832
You asked
Do you have rates of pancreatic cancers relating to the last 5 years?
Also, please could you tell me the death rates from pancreatic cancer over the last 5 years?
We said
Thank you for your request
Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
The disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
The circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
Deaths due to pancreatic cancer have an ICD-10 code of C25.
You can access annual mortality figures between 2013-2021 by using the interactive dataset available on our NOMIS webservice.
In the associated download there is an output from NOMIS showing deaths where pancreatic cancer is the underlying cause of death in England and Wales from 2016 to 2021.
If you would like to extract further data from NOMIS including age and sex disaggregation, or request at a lower geographical level please see the following instructions:
- Select dates (2013 to 2021)
- Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
- Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.
- Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
- Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
- Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available or search by name)
- Select format (Excel or CSV for example)
Data for 2022 will be available on NOMIS in July 2023, with summary tables released as part of the Deaths Registered Series in late May or early June 2023.
