This is an information request relating to the number of staff working at the organisation.
Please include the information for each of the following financial years; 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22:
- The number of staff working at the organisation in each of these financial years
- The total wage bill for each of these years
Please also provide me with the current headcount of staff.

.xls .csvPlease note: Wage bill figures consist of salary, pension, tax and National Insurance (NI) costs for ONS Payroll eligible staff and agency staff. Headcount figures represent staff in post at 31st March each year. 20,565 Census Field staff were in fixed term posts as at 31 March 2021 but none were in post as at 31 March 2022. An element of the 2021/22 wage bill will include Census Field staff who were in post for part of that year.
The growth in our headcount over the period referenced in this request largely relates to the overall increase in activity by the ONS, including the England and Wales Census 2021, the UK-wide COVID-19 Infection Survey and wider analysis, our Economic Statistics Transformation Programme and the Integrated Data Programme.
Our annual headcount and wage bill information is published in our Annual Report and Accounts which are available on the UK Statistics Authority website.

At 30 November 2022, our Headcount was 6045.
