For the purpose of statistical analyses, what is the ONS accepted definition of the following words -
1) female?
2) male?
3) woman?
4) man?
Have these accepted definitions changed in any way in the last twenty years? If so, please supply copies of all documentation used to justify or influence this change.

The Office for National Statistics' statistical analysis is based on survey and administration data. ONS surveys do not define these terms and we do not hold this information on other public bodies' survey or administrative data. We can confirm that there has been no change to our approach in the last 20 years.
