You asked

I have an interest in finding out what's the mortality rate caused by obesity, among adolescents, between 2016-2021? I also would like to know if this rate has increased, on this period?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

ONS hold mortality data for England and Wales, based on the information collected at death registration. The conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

When obesity is recorded as the underlying cause on the death certificate, it is assigned the following ICD-10 code the ICD-10 code E66.

Numbers of deaths, and age standardised rates, by underlying cause (ICD-10 code), sex, five-year age group and area of usual residence, for England and Wales, 2013 to 2020, are available via the NOMIS webservice.

Please follow these instructions to use the NOMIS webservice:

  • Select the geography - (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Latest provisional death registration data for England and Wales, 2021 and 2022, are available in our weekly deaths publication, however, as data are still provisional, full cause of death information is not yet published except for the top ten leading causes of death, which are published in our monthly mortality analysis publication. Finalised death registration data for 2021 will be released in July 2022 in our Deaths Registered Series and NOMIS.

If you wish to receive provisional data for 2021 then we can create a custom output for you based on the current data held.  Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).  Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.  As this information is already available to you via this route ONS considers that S21(1) applies to this request and the information does not have to be supplied under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act. S21(1) is an absolute exemption, and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
