You asked

Please supply data on the number of suicides where the death certificate mentioned "gambling" or " gambled" up until 2021.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We have published the figure requested between 2001 and 2016, please see the following user requested dataset: Number of suicides where the death certificate mentioned gamble or gambling, England and Wales, 2001 to 2016.

Please be cautious when interpreting these data. A text search for the words 'gambling' and 'gambled' was applied to records where the underlying cause of death was suicide. Although this has identified records where gambling was mentioned, the data is not considered completely reliable because the coroner will not always record detailed information regarding the deceased's history. Therefore, these figures represent how many records gambling/gambled was mentioned on the death certificate but are likely to be an undercount.

We can supply the figure requested between 2017 and 2020 as a bespoke data request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
