I'm looking to find out the number of employed Police officers each year from 1990, for either the whole United Kingdom or England, preferably all ranks from PCSO/PC upwards.

The number of these officers that are part of firearms units or are firearms trained.

The amount of these officers that are PCSOs and Special Constables (if Special Constables are included in the total number of officers)

The number of officers at each rank (PC, Sgt, Detective Sgt, up to as high as possible)

I would also like to have access to population estimations from 1990 for either United Kingdom or England (depending on which information on Police Officers is available), I understand that from 2000-2001 is available.

Thank you for your request.

Our estimates of the number of people employed by occupation in the UK are produced from the Annual Population Survey (APS) and are published on our Nomis webservice, accessible via the following link:

https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/datasets/aps168/reports/employment-by-occupation?compare=K02000001

APS estimates (back to 2004) of the number of employed police officers (code 3312) and senior police officers (code 1172) are published on Nomis; however, no further detail is available.

More detailed information may be available from the Home Office, who publish regular police workforce statistics for England and Wales:

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/police-workforce-england-and-wales

They can be contacted at crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

With regards to your request for population estimates from 1990, our UK population estimates, 1838 to 2019 dataset provides these figures.

According to this dataset, the mid-1990 populations of the UK and England were as follows:

UK: 57,237,493

England: 47,699,116

Please contact pop.info@ons.gov.uk if you have any further queries about this data.
