You asked

I would like to make an FOI request for mortality data.

If available, please can you provide data on the number of drug-related deaths mentioning Heroin/Morphine on the death certificate for England, Wales and by local authority for two three-year periods. We are primarily interested in heroin but understand that heroin cannot be distinguished from morphine in an autopsy.

Please provide data on deaths registered in two three-year periods, calendar years 2010-2012 (2010/2011/2012) and 2013-2015 (2013/2014/2015).

Please segment by local authority.

Thank you for your query regarding drug related deaths data.

A table providing figures on drug-related deaths mentioning heroin or morphine on the death certificate by local authority in England and Wales are available on the ad hoc section of our website:

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/adhocs/006307drugrelateddeathsmentioningheroinormorphineonthedeathcertficatelocalauthoritiesofenglandandwales2001to2015registrations

These figures are presented as rolling three-year aggregates from 2001-2003 through to 2013-2015.

If these tables do not meet your requirements special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries should be made to: mortality@ons.gov.uk. We recommend that you contact the Mortality Analysis team directly in order to discuss your data requirements in more detail.
