  1. the number of general dental practitioners in the UK (I can find out the total number of registered dentists via the GDC register, but I am interested in those working as general dental practitioners)
  2. the number of dental practices in the UK.

Once a year we publish a detailed employment by occupation table which includes some information for dental practitioners. The table can be found in the following link:

Labour Force survey provides estimates for the number of people in this occupation and these estimates are subject to sampling variability. The Department for Health might have data which can answer their question more precisely.

In response to your second question, the total number of dental practices in the UK is 12,010 (as of 2017). Please note this figure provided below represents businesses who register for VAT and/or PAYE with HMRC.
