Could you please tell me:

  1. How many newborn babies have been abandoned in the UK, year on year, for the past ten years.

  2. How many of these babies did not survive?

The General Register Office (GRO) maintain a register of abandoned children. The number of abandoned children recorded on this register each year from 2005 to 2016 is published in section 5.6 of our User Guide to Birth Statistics available at:

We do not hold any information on whether these babies survived.

Special extracts and tabulations of births data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
