You asked
Please can you tell me what percentage of households in the UK are mixed ethnicity?
We said
Thank you for your freedom of information request.
We can provide Census 2021 data on the ethnic groups within households, as set out in the Topic Summary Ethnic group, England and Wales: Census 2021 that was published on 29 November 2022.
Please see the section Ethnic groups within households which includes data by local authority as well as England and Wales combined. In the census taken in March 2021, we found that in 10.1% (2.5 million) of households in England and Wales, two or more ethnic groups were represented.
Alternatively, if you are looking for households where individuals specified their own ethnic group as mixed race, instead of the number of households where there is a mix of ethnic groups within a household, you can find data by using the Create a custom dataset tool. You can either select data for the ethnic group of usual residents in households (individuals in a household who stated their ethnic group as "Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups") or at the combination of ethnic groups in households (which includes the variable "Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups only in household").
Ethnic group (all usual residents in households in England and Wales)
Combination of ethnic groups in household (all households in England and Wales)
The UK censuses are run separately by each National Statistics Office (Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA), National Records of Scotland (NRS), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for both England and Wales. To obtain figures for the rest of the UK you would need to contact NISRA and NRS separately.
