FOI Ref: FOI/2022/4140

You asked

My request is in relation to the cause of death specifically in the 15-19 yr old males age bracket, which in 2021 is not reported separately and instead grouped together with 20-29 yr olds https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/causesofdeath/articles/covid19vaccinationandmortalityinyoungpeopleduringthecoronaviruspandemic/2022-03-22

Under the 'Freedom of Information Act 2000', I request disclosure of the following data, using the same categories as used in Table 2a in the link:

the breakdown by cause of death for 15-19 yr old males only, by date of registration for 2021.

the breakdown by cause of death for 15-19 yr old males only, from May 2021 to end April 2022, by date of occurrence for deaths that have been registered for that period.

the breakdown by cause of death for 15-19 yr old males only, by date of occurrence for deaths that have been registered by May of the later year in each case:

May 2017 to end April 2018

May 2018 to end April 2019

May 2019 to end April 2020

May 2020 to end April 2021

Thank you for your request.

We cannot provide information such as cause of death on the deaths of 15--19-year-old males by date of occurrence/registration as this would be disclosive. These figures were supressed in order to protect the confidentiality of individuals. This is consistent with the disclosure control methodology used for deaths. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individual businesses or persons can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

We could however provide you with data on counts of deaths of 15-19-year-old males over the time periods requested and for the cause breakdowns as a custom output. Information on counts of deaths along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such bespoke enquiries can be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
