FOI Reference: FOI/2022/4252

You asked

I would like to make the following request under the Freedom of Information Act.

Could you tell me the number of people who have been diagnosed with mouth cancer and deaths caused by mouth cancer in the years:

  • 2022 (to the nearest date to present)
  • 2021
  • 2020
  • 2019
  • 2018

Could you please break the information down by year and the county the person was living in?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We do not hold data on the prevalence of mouth cancer, this information is held by NHS Digital who would be better placed to assist your enquiry.

For deaths due to mouth cancer, we use the following ICD-10 codes: Malignant neoplasms of lip, oral cavity, and pharynx (C00-C14).

Our NOMIS webservice provides a breakdown of deaths for ICD-10 code by requested geography, sex and age. Please see attached a copy of data for 2016-2021 for England and Wales, including non-residents. However, with the following instructions, you can request your own data breakdown.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
  • Select Age -- All ages or 5-year age bands.
  • Select Gender -- Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates -- All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

We have not conducted analysis of 2022 data yet, as this is still provisional. This is to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths that have been referred for Coroner investigation. We do report on leading causes of death in our Monthly Mortality analysis publication, but this will not always include your requested ICD-10 code.

If you would like analysis of 2022 data, we can provide this as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of data are available to order from the HALE customer Services team. User requested data sets are subject to disclosure control, legal frame works, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy. Please note that as mentioned above our bespoke analysis will only include deaths and not diagnosis numbers.

If you would like to obtain a quote for this service, which is out with the FOI framework please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk

As the only information that can be provided is already available to you via this route, we consider that s.21(1) applies to this request and the information does not have to be supplied under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act. S.21(1) is an absolute exemption, and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.
