FOI Ref: FOI/2022/4428

You asked

Please provide relevant statistical information about mortality rate for under 50 year olds in the UK for the years 2021 and 2022?

How does mortality rate under 50 year olds for the aforementioned years compare to 2018 and 2019?

Has any effort been made by the ONS to collect specific data of vaccine and booster rollouts or any other factors to compare with deaths of under 50 year olds from unknown or other causes in the UK in the last two years?

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore we do not hold the requested information for the whole of the UK. Should you wish to obtain Scottish or Northern Irish data, NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

However, the information you have requested on mortality rates by age for England and Wales are available in Table 4 of our Deaths registered in England and Wales dataset. These rates are available from 2010 to 2021 and split by sex and age. We have not been able to produce these the mortality rates by age for 2022 yet. The mid-year population estimates are not available yet and the mortality data is still in a provisional state.

Additionally, please see tables 1 and 2 of our monthly mortality analysis for monthly breakdowns for monthly mortality rates in 2022. Please note, this is not split by age group.

We have also produced analysis on vaccine effectiveness in our Deaths by vaccination status, England dataset. Please see Table 4 which gives under 50 age and sex mortality rate breakdowns by vaccination status in England. This analysis was derived from the Public Health Data Asset (PHDA) using vaccination data supplied by NHS Digital. Please note, we do not hold this data for Wales as this analysis is not available to ONS via our Public Health Data Asset (PHDA).

You also wish to view information on Coronavirus vaccinations via Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) yellow card reporting scheme. Please see the following link to their headline summary from September 2022: Coronavirus vaccine - summary of Yellow Card reporting.
