You asked
The data showing Idiopathic Pulmonary fibrosis (ICD ICD10) for the year 2022 showed 4500 death. What population do you have for 2022, as I wanted the mortality as number per 100,00 population so it is comparable with your prior quotes of 2016?
We said
Thank you for your enquiry.
Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.
The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death and or b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
The ICD-10 cause code for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is J84.1
The number of deaths registered in England and Wales for 2022 where the underlying cause of death was recorded as J84.1 was 4,500 and the age standardised mortality rate per 100,000 population was 7.6. The mid-year population estimate for England and Wales in 2022 is 60,238,038
