Deaths Registered in England and Wales 2018 to 2021 

We hold the following analysis Deaths registered in England and Wales which provides registered deaths by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death and the leading causes of death. 

For 2022 we have published the following analysis, Death registration summary statistics, England and Wales, which provides the number of deaths registered by year, sex, area of usual residence and selected underlying cause of death. We will publish age disaggregation as part of the Deaths Registered Series in July 2023. 

Alternatively, deaths registered in England and Wales are available to download from our NOMIS webservice  for 2013 to 2021, with 2022 data available in July 2023. 

If you would like to extract data from this service, please see the following instructions: 

  • Select Query Data 

  • Select Mortality Statistics – underlying cause, sex, and age 

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority) 

  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands 

  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female   

  • Select rates – All deaths, rates, or percentage of population for example 

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available) 

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)   

Provisional Deaths Registered in England and Wales 2022 and 2023   

We publish provisional Deaths registered weekly and Monthly mortality analysis which will provide provisional data for deaths registered in England and Wales by age group. 

We will publish finalised data for 2022 with cause and age disaggregation as part of the Deaths Registered Series in July 2023. However, please note these finalised figures may not match the provisional numbers in Deaths registered weekly and Monthly mortality analysis due to the inclusion of late registrations, which are deaths referred for Coroner Investigation.
