Estimates of suicides among higher education students by sex, age and ethnicity was produced as collaboration between ONS and the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Analysis was based on mortality records linked to HESA student records. This analysis was published in June 2018, though an update is expected to be released in Summer 2022. You can access the report via the following link: Estimating suicide among higher education students, England and Wales: Experimental Statistics.
For the purposes of this analysis, a 'student' is defined as a person registered at a higher education (HE) provider in the UK and who follows a course that leads to the award of a qualification or HE provider credit.
We do not hold data or analysis for children or young adults undertaking GSCE's, further education or apprenticeships.
The production of the above publication involves linking HESA and ONS data, we cannot provide any estimates for other definitions of student (for example, studying for GCSEs, to those engaged in apprenticeships, further education) as this level of education is not listed within this linked data set.
