We are responsible for publishing statistics for England and Wales.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you have requested. Homicide data in England and Wales are collected by the Home Office therefore, they may be better placed to assist with your enquiry. They can be contacted via email at: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

Scottish Government are responsible for publishing homicide data in Scotland therefore, it might be worth contacting them directly for data on Scotland. Our most recent homicide data can be found in our Crime in England and Wales: Police Force Area data tables. Table P1 shows the number of police recorded homicides by police force area, English regions and Wales, year ending March 2021. This data is sourced from Home Office police recorded crime data. Unfortunately, this data is not split by sex.

Table 4 of our Appendix tables: homicide in England and Wales shows Offences currently recorded as homicide, by age and sex of victim, year ending March 2010 to year ending March 2020 in England and Wales. These published figures were derived from the Home Office Homicide Index as of 15 December 2020. These figures are subject to revision as cases are dealt with by the police and the courts, or as further information becomes available.

Table 22 of our Domestic abuse prevalence and victim characteristics - Appendix tables show the characteristics of domestic and other homicides for victims aged 16 years and over, combined data for year ending March 2017 to year ending March 2019 in England and Wales. This data is sourced from the Home Office Homicide Index. Homicide figures include cases where:

  • a person is initially charged with homicide
  • a person who was subsequently convicted of homicide
  • a person who is suspected by the police of having committed the offence but is known to have died or committed suicide prior to arrest or being charged.
