You asked

I would like to know:

Q1. The mean weekly disposable income for the financial year 2020/21, and the key figures used in the production of this measure. Specifically original income, cash benefits, gross income, less direct taxes and employees national insurance contributions and disposable income. Please present this as per Family spending workbook 5, table 2.7.

Q2. The component parts of mean weekly expenditure given to rent for renters in the financial year 2020/21. Specifically rent, gross rent, less housing benefit, rebates and allowances received and net rent. Please present this as per the Family spending workbook 5, table 2.8.

Q3. The component parts of mean weekly expenditure on mortgages for mortgage holders in the financial year 2020/21. Specifically, total expenditure for mortgage payers, mortgage interest payments, mortgage protection premiums and capital repayment of mortgage. Please present this as per the Family spending workbook 5, table 2.9.

For questions 1 to 3, please could you provide responses for each of the population categories in the following list and for each of the years 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20:

  • Single person households -- non retired
  • Single parent households -- retired and non-retired
  • Single person households -- retired
  • Two person households -- non-retired

Thank you for your enquiry concerning household disposable income and housing expenditure breakdowns by household type between FYE 2015 and FYE 2021.

As you may already be aware, some of your requested breakdowns for mean annual disposable income components are published online for non-retired households as part of the following analysis: Effects of Taxes and Benefits.

Please note that table contents have changed over time, and as a result table numbers may differ across the requested financial years in the following ways:

1a) Single person households – non retired

  • For financial year ending (FYE) 2020 and FYE 2021, income components are available in Table 12a.
  • For FYE 2018 and FYE 2019, income components are available in Table 12.
  • FYE 2017, income components are available in Table 13.
  • For FYE 2016, income components are available in Table 27
  • For FYE 2015, income components are available in Table 19

1b) Two person households – non-retired

  • For financial year ending (FYE) 2020 and FYE 2021, income components are available in Table 12a.
  • For FYE 2018 and FYE 2019, income components are available in Table 12.
  • FYE 2017, income components are available in Table 13.
  • For FYE 2016, income components are available in Table 27
  • For FYE 2015, income components are available in Table 19
