ONS publishes marriage statistics for marriages that take place in England and Wales. The statistics are derived from information recorded when marriages are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement. Statistics are available on the number of marriages that have taken place by area of occurrence (regions, unitary authorities, metropolitan districts and non metropolitan counties). The latest figures available are for 2011 (see spreadsheet titled 'Marriages by Area of Occurrence, Type of Ceremony and Denomination', Table 1) on the ONS website.

Figures for East Grinstead and Crawley are not included within this table as East Grinstead is a parish and Crawley is a non-metropolitan district.

ONS does not produce statistics on applications for divorces but only on the number of divorces that took place in England and Wales, following court orders. These statistics are not broken down by area. The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) does publish data on divorce petitions and decree nisi by Designated Family Judge area and region in their Family Court Statistics Quarterly publication which is available on the MOJ website (see Family Data tables and the CSV file CSV_DFJ_level).

Other special extracts and tabulations of marriage and divorce data for England and Wales are available (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate).
