Can you please provide data on margin debt and securities-based loans, (SBLs) that is recorded in the financial system?

Please provide the data in a time series dating back to 1970.

Marginal debt is the amount debt that institutions and individuals can borrow against their shareholdings and securities-based loans, (SBLs).

The UK National Accounts does not hold or produce statistics on margin debt.

However, Tables 13.3.4 and 13.3.5 within the UKEA dataset presents both financial flows and stocks data for Loans (F.4) and Equity and investment fund shares/units (F.5), by institutional sector. The data is available both annually and quarterly back to 1987. The link to the latest version of this dataset is below:

Further breakdowns of Loans into sub categories can be found within the Financial Account (flows) and Balance Sheet tables (stocks) for each institutional sector (tables x.1.8 and x.1.11).

Securities based loans, whilst included within the F.4 Loans category, unfortunately cannot be separately identified as the data is not available at this level of granularity.
