You asked

I would be grateful if you could provide any available Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) data relating specifically to male victims of domestic abuse, including:

  1. The number and proportion of male victims who reported abuse to police

  2. The number and proportion who did not report abuse

  3. Reasons for not reporting domestic abuse

  4. Breakdowns by age, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation where available

  5. Types of abuse experienced by male victims

  6. Repeat victimisation data

  7. Historical trend data concerning male victimisation and reporting behaviour

  8. Any available data measuring confidence in police or criminal justice agencies among male victims

If these data are already available within published datasets, I would be grateful if you could direct me to the relevant data, tables and variables.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We publish domestic abuse statistics from two main sources: police recorded crime and the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). Data on trends in domestic abuse from both sources are collated in our annual Domestic Abuse in England and Wales overview publications.

You may find the Domestic Abuse Prevalence and Victim Characteristics dataset useful. Tables 1 to 6 contain CSEW estimates and prevalence rates of domestic abuse, including breakdowns by sex, type of abuse and personal characteristics.

For police recorded crime, Table 11 provides the proportion of violence against the person offences recorded by the police that were identified as domestic abuse-related crimes broken down by age and sex. Whereas Table 15 provides the proportion of domestic abuse-related crimes recorded by the police by sex of victim and selected offence groups. Both of these tables are from the police recorded data provided by the Home Office. Reviewing previous editions of the dataset may also help with examining trends over time.

Please note that the dataset is scheduled to be updated in November 2026 with year ending March 2026 data.

Moreover, we may also find our previously published Partner abuse in detail - Office for National Statistics dataset of interest, specifically:

  • Table 9: Physical injuries and other effects experienced as a result of partner abuse in the last year, year ending March 2023, by sex.

  • Table 12: Whether the victim had personally told anyone about the partner abuse experienced in the last year, year ending March 2023, by sex.

  • Table 13: Whether the police were informed about the partner abuse experienced in the last year, year ending March 2023.

  • Table 15: Whether the victim was satisfied with the outcome, where reported in the last year, year ending March 2023.

Unfortunately, we do not hold estimates on reasons for not reporting partner abuse to the police or satisfaction with the outcome by sex. We have not previously created this because the sample size is not sufficient to produce reliable information on this. Nor do we hold estimates on the reasons for not reporting to the police more generally, repeat victimisation, or confidence in the police specifically among male domestic abuse victims.

Police recorded crime data are supplied to us by the Home Office. You could contact them directly at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk and they may be able to assist you further.
