Thank you for your enquiry.

How many homicides were there in the Black Male age range 16-24 years group from April 2019-March 2020 in each region of England and Wales?

Unfortunately, we do not hold homicide data by all of the breakdowns requested, however you may find the following information helpful.

The Appendix tables published alongside Homicide in England and Wales: year ending March 2021 provide some of the data you requested.

  • Worksheet 4 breaks down the number of offences currently recorded as homicide by age and sex of the victim

  • Worksheet 5 breaks down the number of offences currently recorded as homicide by age and ethnic appearance of the victim

  • Table 21 shows the number of offences currently recorded as homicide by police force area

The data in the homicide appendix tables originates from the Homicide Index which is held by the Home Office. The Homicide Index is continually updated with revised information from the police as investigations continue and as cases are heard by the courts. The version used for analysis does not accept updates after it is "frozen" to ensure the data do not change during the analysis period. The data in the latest homicide appendix tables to year ending March 2021 refer to the position as at 10 December 2021. The data will change as subsequent court hearings take place or as further information is received.

The Home Office may be able to help you further and can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

What are the exact population statistics for ages 16-24yrs black male from April 2019 to March 2020?

Our 'gold standard' source for population estimates by ethnic group remains the 2011 Census. Data derived from the census are particularly useful when considering more detailed population groups than the 18 ethnic groups by age, sex and region. It is important to note that these estimates will not reflect change since census day in 2011. These data are freely available at national and subnational level on the  Nomis website.  You may be interested in the following tables:

Unfortunately, your request for an exact age breakdown of 16 to 24 years of the Black male population, is not held in the 2011 Census standard publications. However, you may wish to submit a request for an ad-hoc table to be produced with 2011 figures. Further information on how to do this can be found here.

In December 2021, we published Population estimates by ethnic group and religion, England and Wales: 2019. This publication builds on previous research and user feedback and was published in response to the need for more timely population estimates by ethnic group and religion.

These are experimental statistics of population by 18 ethnic groups and 8 religious groups by age and sex at the national and regional level for England and Wales. As such, they are official statistics but will be subject to further testing in terms of quality and ability to meet user needs. Please note, while our 2019 estimates are timely, they are broken down by 10-year age bands which do not reflect the exact age breakdown of 16 to 24 that you would like.

As these estimates are primarily derived from survey data, they are not precise figures, therefore please be aware of the quality information you can find in the  accompanying datasets. Further detail of strengths, limitations and quality information is outlined in  Section 6  of the article. We have also published a Review of the current evidence base for population estimates by ethnic group  produced within the ONS, to provide guidance to users as to which estimates to use for what purpose.

Finally, you may also be interested in Census 2021 data which will be released later this year. The Census 2021 first results will be released on 28th June 2022 with other data and analysis following through the year. Our full release plans can be found here. If you would like to discuss the provision of a bespoke table of something similar to your request after the release of our Census 2021 results, please feel free to get in touch with Census.Customer.Services@ons.gov.uk.
