Thank you for your request.

We do not hold information on bladder cancer diagnosis. These statistics are published by NHS Digital who are better placed to answer this enquiry. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, and by telephone at 0300 303 5678.

We do however hold mortality statistics for bladder cancer. ONS mortality data is taken from information recorded on the death certificate, smoking status is not recorded on the death certificate unless it is deemed by a medical professional to be part of the causal chain of death.

The conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) . From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Deaths where malignant neoplasm of the bladder are mentioned on the death certificate are recorded with an ICD-10 code of C67.

Deaths registered from 2013 to 2021 in England and Wales can be accessed via our interactive webservice NOMIS.

Please see male deaths due to bladder cancer in England and Wales below.

Historic data is available by ICD-10 code in our 21st Century Mortality publication.

We have not conducted analysis of this cause of death by vaccination status, or analysis of deaths due to bladder cancer with smoking related diseases as a contributory factor. We could provide this as a bespoke extract which is outside of the Freedom of Information Scheme. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data are available to order from the HALE Customer Services Team. They are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy.  Please note as mentioned above that any bespoke tabulation would only include statistics for England and Wales.
