You asked

I am looking to find a comprehensive list of job titles by hierarchy and industry from the latest data available. I can see some standard occupation tools on the ONS site but I can find a downloadable XSL file including all the major and minor classifications. Are you able to help, please?

Thank you for your request for a list of job titles by hierarchy and industry from the latest data available.

Job titles are classified using the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC), which is organised in a hierarchy with 4-digits being the lowest level. You can find the latest, comprehensive list of job titles by SOC in the SOC2020 Coding Index (column H *INDEXOCC *intheSOC2020 coding index tab).

Industry is classified using the UK SIC Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activity (UK SIC). This is a separate classification to SOC, based on a different methodology and as such, we do not have a list of job titles by industry. However, this could be produced as a bespoke request from our ONS Social Services Customer Service team. This team provides an ad hoc analysis service, including - of relevance in this instance - tabulations of Labour force (LFS) and Annual Population Survey (APS) data, both of which contain data on SIC and SOC. This service is subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there will be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only accessible on payment, Section 21(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.

Details of the variables included in these datasets can be viewed in the LFS User Guides https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/methodologies/labourforcesurveyuserguidance

If you are able to do your own cross-tabulations, you could purchase an anonymised LFS or APS dataset from the UK Data Service. Details on costs and how to download the data can be found on their website:
