In answer to your question 'What is the life expectancy of women aged 55 in 2011?', you can find the data on our website here;
A woman aged 55 in 2011 could expect to have 29.6 years left to live (from 2011) on average, based on our period estimate of life expectancy. The link above gives figures for both period and cohort life expectancy.
A period life expectancy uses mortality rates from a single year (or group of years) and assume that those rates apply throughout the remainder of a person’s life. This means that any future changes to mortality rates would not be taken into account. Whereas, cohort life tables show the probability of a person from a given cohort dying at each age over the course of their lifetime. Importantly the cohort life table takes into account observed and projected improvements in mortality for the cohort throughout its lifetime.
