You asked

Could you please provide me with data regarding life expectancy at birth and premature mortality rate by sex and by upper-tier local authority in England as single-year estimates and not over 3-year intervals as they are currently supplied?

Currently, it is impossible to calculate these accurately due to mortality statistics' rounding of deaths by age group at local authority level (see https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/datasets/mortsa).

I would appreciate it if you would provide these measures annually, for 2013 to 2019 (or most recent year available).

Essentially, I would require the following 4 measures, calculated from single-year mortality statistics:

  • male life expectancy at birth,

  • female life expectancy at birth,

  • male premature (under 75 years of age) mortality rate from all causes,

  • female premature (under 75 years of age) mortality rate from all causes,

for all upper-tier local authorities in England, between 2013 to 2019 (or most recent year available).

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

We do produce mortality rates per 100,000 for years of life lost by cause, this can be found in table 12 of our Death Registered Series. We do not hold these at a lower geography.

In order to provide the life expectancy at birth data you have requested, we would need use to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. However, special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order as part of our bespoke services. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
