You asked

How much has knife crime risen in the last ten years?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry. Data on police-recorded knife crime for England and Wales are provided to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) by the Home Office.

We publish a quarterly bulletin called 'Crime in England and Wales' which contains the latest police recorded figures on knife crime in Section 7. Appendix Table A4 which is published alongside this release shows the number of police-recorded crimes since the year ending March 2003. Rows 233 to 241 of this table are relevant to weapon offences. More detailed data on selected police-recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument can be found within Tables F3a to F3c of the 'other related data tables' which are also published alongside this bulletin. These tables provide data going back to the year ending March 2011.

We also publish a release called 'The nature of violent crime in England and Wales'. Appendix Table 19 onwards of the 'offences involving the use of weapons: data tables' that are published alongside this release also provide more detailed trend data on knife crime, with the earliest year of data being the year ending March 2009.

If you have any further questions, please email us at crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help. Similarly, if you have any specific questions on police-recorded knife crime data, you can contact Home Office directly at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.
