The graph attached, showing "Deaths due to Covid and flu" - even though the line for "flu" is actually flu and pneumonia - is produced by the BBC and sourced from ONS on 23 May 2022. It appears at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-52380643

It says "% of weekly deaths in England and Wales involving each condition in which it is the underlying cause of death" and below the graph the BBC has said " 'Involving' is when flu or Covid is mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory factor"

How many of the flu cases have pneumonia mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory factor?

Thank you for your enquiry.

ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10).

The ICD-10 code for influenza is J09 – J11. The ICD-10 code for pneumonia is J12 to J18.

Using the NOMIS Explorable dataset you can extract data to show deaths with influenza and pneumonia as the underlying cause.

We can provide as a user requested data set deaths due to influenza with pneumonia as a contributory mention, also include the above data for 2022. This would be a custom data extract which would be subject to legal frameworks, resources, disclosure controls and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy.
