Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause code for influenza is J09 -- J11.

We hold annual mortality information from 2017 to 2021 on our NOMIS webservice.

Please see the following instructions, which walk through how to use NOMIS:

  • Select mortality statistics

2022

Summary statistics for deaths registered in 2022 are available in Deaths registered summary statistics, England and Wales. 2022 data will be uploaded into NOMIS after Deaths registered in England and Wales: 2022 bulletin is published.

2023

We include provisional figures of deaths registered in 2023 in our 'Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional' bulletin. The dataset 'Deaths registered in England and Wales, provisional', contains figures on deaths due to Influenza or Pneumonia in Sheet 3.

Death registrations data for 2023 will be finalised next year to account for delayed registrations.

Information specifically on influenza deaths registered between September to August each year, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order via our bespoke services route.
