You asked

Please provide details of UK influenza mortality rates for each year from 2017 to 2020, or the most recent year you have data for.

By mortality rate, I am seeking how many influenza cases were recorded and how many influenza deaths were recorded in these timeframes, not only the number of deaths from influenza or percentage of all UK deaths that were attributed to influenza.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold the requested data for the whole of the UK. Should you wish to obtain this data from NRS and NISRA, they can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We do not hold data on the number of deaths involving influenza against the number of cases of influenza, as we do not receive data involving infections. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your query. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, and by telephone at 0300 303 5678.

However, deaths due to influenza for 2017 -- 2020 in England and Wales can be found on our NOMIS webservice. Underlying cause of death is coded from the death certificate using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10).

Below are the ICD-10 codes you will require to identify deaths from each of the causes you have listed:

Influenza J09 -- J11.
