We said

Thank you for your request.

We have published information from the Census 2021 for England and Wales showing population but ethnic group for Cambridgeshire on our website, accessible via the following link: Census 2021 England and Wales population by ethnic group for Cambridgeshire.

These data are taken from the responses to the ethnic group question on the census.

The ethnic group question had two stages.

Firstly, a person identified through one of the following five high-level ethnic groups:

  • "Asian, Asian British, Asian Welsh"
  • "Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African"
  • "Mixed or Multiple"
  • "White"
  • "Other ethnic group"

Secondly, a person identified through one of the 19 available response options.

One of the 19 available response options was a tick box for "Indian". This came under the high-level "Asian, Asian British, Asian Welsh" category.

The number of people who identified as "Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh: Indian" in Cambridgeshire was 12,824.

Census 2021 also asked questions about a person's country of birth and the countries for which they hold a passport, which is used to indicate a person's nationality. This country of birth data and passports held data is also published on the Office for National Statistics' website.

The number of people in Cambridgeshire who were born in India was 8,152.

The number of people in Cambridgeshire who held an Indian passport was 4,218.

In the case of multiple passports being held, they were categorised in the following priority order for statistical purposes to prevent double-counting residents:

  • UK passport
  • Irish passport
  • other country passport

This uses the geographical classification of 2023 Upper Tier Local Authority of Cambridgeshire. Upper tier local authorities provide a range of local services. In 2023 there were 153 upper tier local authorities in England made up of 63 unitary authorities, 36 metropolitan districts, 33 London boroughs (including City of London) and 21 counties.
