You asked
Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to request the following information:
The number of deaths registered in England and Wales in each year 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 where the underlying cause of death was idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (ICD-10 code J84.1).
If any data are already available for 2025, please also include those figures (provisional is acceptable).
Please present the results in a simple table showing the year and number of deaths.
We said
Thank you for your request.
Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.
The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
- the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death
or
- the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
The ICD-10 cause code for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is J84.1.
Data on deaths registered between 2013 and 2024 with an underlying cause of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis by sex and age-group in England and Wales can be accessed using NOMIS.
