Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the information you have requested.

We report on homicides using the Home Office Homicide Index which contains detailed record-level information about each homicide recorded by police in England and Wales. These figures provide a higher level of detail about the nature and circumstances of homicide offences than the main police recorded crime dataset. They do not include data on justifiable homicides in self-defence.

Our most recent statistics on homicides in England and Wales can be found in our publication Homicide in England and Wales: year ending March 2019. You can find data of the total number of homicides per year in England and Wales from the year ending December 1969 to the year ending March 2019 in Appendix Table 1 and data for England in Appendix Table 19.

Homicide data from the main recorded dataset for England for the year ending June 2020 can be found in Table P1 of our Crime in England and Wales: Police Force Area data tables.

Data regarding homicides is sourced from the Homicide Index, which is held and collated by the Home Office. They may be able to assist you further with your request. They can be contacted at the following email address: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

Coroners statistics are held and published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). Table 7 in Coroners statistics 2019 : England and Wales (statistics tables) show the number of inquest conclusions killed lawfully recorded by Coroners in England and Wales, for the years 1995 to 2019.

Should you require further information relating to this publication, MoJ can be contacted via: statistics.enquiries@justice.gsi.gov.uk.
