FOI Reference: FOI/2022/4278

You asked

I would like to request from the census:

  • The percentage of homeowners in the UK

  • The different number of religions in the UK and their percentage

  • The demographics of the UK

We said

Thank you for your request.

On 28 June 2022 we published the first results from Census 2021 on the population and housing in England and Wales that took place on 21 March 2021.

The datasets and the statistical bulletins for first results can be accessed via this page on the Office for National Statistics website: https://www.ons.gov.uk/releases/initialfindingsfromthe2021censusinenglandandwales

More detailed statistics will be released as part of our topic summaries. We will publish the first topic summary in October and the last by the end of this year 2022.

However, the most up to date detailed statistics for the UK are from the 2011 Census. Please find 2011 Census Tables attached detailing Religion, Population, Population Age structure and homeownership  for the UK. Religion is not available for the UK as the questions were not harmonised, so QS210 (detailed religion) is for England and Wales only. You will need to obtain a religion table from National Records of Scotland (NRS)  who are responsible for Censuses in Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), who are responsible for Northern Ireland's Census.

The tables were extracted from www.nomisweb.co.uk. Nomis is a service run on behalf of the ONS by Durham University.

For further information, you can contact census.customerservices@ons.gov.uk in future, who can advise.
