You asked

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I would like to request statistical data on the number of homeowners in Wandsworth between the ages of 25 and 34.

Specifically, I am seeking:

  1. The total number of homeowners aged 25 to 34 in Wandsworth, broken down by age group (if possible).
  2. Any relevant demographic data regarding homeownership in this age group (e.g., trends, percentage of total homeowners).

For these time periods:

  • 2020/21
  • 2021/22
  • 2022/23
  • 2023/24
  • 2024/25

If this information is not available in the exact format requested, I would be grateful if you could provide any alternative data or direct me to the appropriate department or source that may have this information.

Thank you for your enquiry.

The information you have requested can be created for individual years using Annual Population Survey (APS) data. The APS collects tenure and age at local authority level, although, please note the numbers of homeowners within a specific age group may be quite small. Bespoke outputs can be ordered from our Social Surveys Customer Service team. Such services are subject to legal frameworks, resources and agreement of costs, in line with the ONS charging policy. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk.

As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only accessible on payment, Section 21(2)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.

In case it is helpful, for 2021, similar data can be obtained from the Census. However because the tenure question was asked at a household rather than individual level, it is not possible to definitively say that person is the homeowner, just that they are living in an owner-occupied home.

The associated download provides tenure by age for the London Borough of Wandsworth from Census 2021. This has been extracted from our create a custom dataset tool. The create a custom dataset enables users to find and download multiple combinations of data they are most interested in. You may wish to review this for any further extracts of data.

The Census data suggests that in 2021 there were 24,252 people aged 25 to 34 living in an owner-occupied property in Wandsworth, however this does not necessarily mean they were the homeowner, for example if they were living with their parents who were the homeowner. To illustrate this limitation, the equivalent figure for people aged 15 and under in an owner-occupied property in Wandsworth was 25,191: Lower tier local authorities, Age (6 categories) and Tenure of household (5 categories).
