You asked

How many people in England and Wales have died from HIV/AIDS since 1980?

If you cannot supply the exact statistics, could you please provide me with some similar information.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10).

From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause code for HIV is B20-B24.

Some of the information you have requested part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice. NOMIS holds data from 2013-2020.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

For historic data please use the 20th Century Mortality and 21st Century Mortality files.

20th Century will hold data from 1901 to 2000 and 21st Century holds mortality data from 2001 to 2020. When using excel use CTRL and F Button to search by ICD-10 code B20 to B20.

Finalised Mortality statistics for 2021 will be published in July 2022 as part of our Deaths Registered Series, this is to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths which have been referred for Coroner Investigation and to use finalised mid-year population estimates.

We can create a custom output. However please note, as mentioned above, that you may wish to wait for our confirmed 2021 statistics in July 2022 before requesting a bespoke request, as data in its current form for 2021 and 2022 is still provisional and subject to change. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
