You asked

I'm examining whether the expansion of university provision in the UK (following the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act) led to increased economic growth.

Namely, would you be able to provide me with university enrolment / student numbers across the UK for this period following the enactment of the legislation above - post-1992 to the current day?

I've had a look at the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) webpage, and I note that data is available as far back as the year 1994/95. However, as I've mentioned, because I'm examining the impact of the 1992 legislation, I would ideally like to have historic data which goes back earlier still - at least to 1992/93, if not indeed as far back as 1990/91. So, I'm wondering if you might be able to assist with this.

Thank you for your request.

We currently hold higher education (HE) student enrolment data covering academic years 2011/12 to 2020/21. This is published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and is publicly available on their website and can be found here: HE student enrolments by level of study 2011/12 to 2020/21.

However, we do not currently hold older higher education enrolment data, as such we advise contacting HESA directly to request this via official.statistics@hesa.ac.uk.
