FOI reference: FOI-2023-1625

You asked

I am seeking information regarding hate speech convictions in England and Wales from the year 1945 to the present date, 2023.

Specifically, I am interested in statistical data that includes the number of convictions, categorised by year, the types of hate speech involved, and any other pertinent information available.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We do not typically publish data on hate crimes/hate speech. The main statistical publication on hate crime is the annual Home Office publication: Hate Crime, England and Wales.

This publication typically includes both police recorded crime and data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). However, due to the suspension of face-to-face data collection during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the CSEW has not been able to collect sufficient hate crime data to contribute to this publication since 2019-20. Data from the 2019-20 publication can be found here. If you require more information on this release, Home Office can be contacted via crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

However, please note that this publication does not include data on convictions. For more information on convictions, please see the CPS website or contact them directly via enquiries@cps.gov.uk.

If you have any further crime-related enquiries, the ONS Centre for Crime and Justice can be reached at the following e-mail address: CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk.
