You asked

I would like to make a Freedom of Information Request for the following information:

FROM THE CRIME SURVEY FOR ENGLAND AND WALES

All statistics in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) that relate to hate crime for the most recent bulletins. (CSEW is published quarterly) I want data from each bulletin published in the period from April 2015 to present day inclusive (the most recent being year ending Dec 2016). Please note that the most recent Home Office publication on Hate crime (15/16) does not include any statistics or analysis from the CSEW, as has been done in previous versions.

This should include the number of people reporting having experienced a hate crime or racially/religiously aggravated crime.

I want this information disaggregated by:

  • Hate crime strand (race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity)
  • Demographic characteristics of the victim (e.g. race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender etc)

FROM THE POLICE RECORDED CRIMES

The number of hate crimes reported to the police each month from January 2015 to May 2017 (inclusive)

I want this information disaggregated by:

  • Regional police force the crime was reported to
  • Type of hate crime (i.e. by the 5 strands: race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity)
  • The number of racially or religiously motivated crimes recorded by the police each month from January 2015 to May 2016 inclusive.

I want this information disaggregated by regional police force.

Thank you for your enquiry relating to the latest data on hate crime from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime.

Unfortunately we do not hold the CSEW information you have requested. We have not produced any annual estimates of hate crime for the time periods you have specified.

It is not possible to produce hate crime figures using a single year’s worth of data due to the relatively low volume of hate crime incidents reported by respondents in the CSEW.

To produce hate crime estimates using a larger sample size we combine data from three survey years. This approach was used in the latest release of these CSEW data, Hate Crime, England and Wales 2014/15 release published by the Home Office which presents estimates based on a three year dataset from April 2013 to March 2015.

If you are interested in obtaining further information on estimates based on combined years we recommend that you contact the ONS Crime Statistics Team directly at crime.statistics@ons.gov.uk in order to discuss your data requirements and options in more detail.

Concerning your request for data on police recorded crime, we do not collect or hold data on hate crime recorded by the police. Police recorded hate crime data are supplied to the Home Office by the 43 territorial police forces of England and Wales, plus the British Transport Police. The latest hate crime data available was published in Hate Crime, England and Wales 2015/16.

You may wish to contact the Home Office in relation to your request for hate crime data broken down by hate crime strand, month and regional police force, from January 2015 to May 2017. The Home Office can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.
