You asked

I was wondering if you might be able to help me with providing statistics of hate crime based on sexual orientation for England and Wales from 2004-2014. If you could provide the number of reported incidents as well as crimes that would be especially helpful.

There is a limited back series of datasets available on police recorded hate crimes, and while they capture only those hate crimes recorded by the police (unlike the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) where unreported crimes are recorded), they may be a better source of data to use than the CSEW.

These datasets are updated annually, and the latest Home Office statistical bulletin Hate Crimes: England and Wales 2013/14 provides statistics on hate crime by sexual orientation for 2013/14, and also selected data for the years 2011/12 and 2012/13, at England and Wales and also police force level:

Specifically, data tables of interest include:

  • Table 2: Hate crimes recorded by the police, by monitored strand, 2011/12 to 2013/14 (Numbers and percentage change)

  • Figure 4: Breakdown of hate crime by selected offence types, England and Wales, 2013/14 (Percentages)

  • Appendix table 1.01: Hate crimes in England and Wales by police force area, 2012/13 (Numbers)

  • Appendix table 1.02: Hate crimes in England and Wales by police force area, 2013/14 (Numbers)

  • Appendix table 1.03: Breakdown of recorded offence sub groupings by monitored hate crime strand, 2013/14 (Percentages)

If you have any further questions regarding these reports please contact the Home Office directly at crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.

While 2011/12 is the earliest that the Home Office collected data on hate crime, there is some further earlier information collected by the Association of Chief Police officers (ACPO).
