You asked

I would like to request information regarding the number of hate crimes reported as a result of social media; for example, hate speech and threats.

I want to know how many incidents have been reported as well as how many were taken to court as well as the number of cases where no further action was taken.

The time frame I am looking for is from 2010 to 2018.

Thank you for your request relating to hate crime.

We do not hold data on the number of hate crimes reported to the police as a result of social media or on how many of these were taken to court or the number of cases where no further action was taken.

The Home Office are responsible for publishing data on hate crimes recorded by the police. They produce an annual report 'Hate Crime, England and Wales', which may be of interest to you. These annual reports are available from the year ending 2014 to the year ending 2019.

It is possible the Home Office may hold more detailed information about the reporting of hate crime experienced online. They can be contacted by email at: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) publishes information regarding charges and convictions. You can contact them by email at: statistics.enquiries@justice.gov.uk.
