You asked

Please provide any hate crime statistics within the East Asian communities before and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry on hate crime statistics.

Due to the pandemic, face-to-face interviewing for the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) was suspended on 17 March 2020 and will not resume until at least 2021. Given the huge interest in understanding how the pandemic has affected crime, we have been working as quickly as possible to set up a telephone-operated crime survey.

With this change in fieldwork mode, we were unable to include many of the survey questions that are included in the face-to-face questionnaire because of time constraints placed on a telephone interview. Additionally, the sample size of the telephone survey is much smaller than that of the face-to-face CSEW, so we are unable to provide breakdowns by ethnicity.

The latest data published from the telephone-operated crime survey, presenting the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on crime and people's perceptions of crime during the April to June 2020 period are available in our Crime in England and Wales, year ending June release. However, we do not present any data on hate crime within this release.

The latest published data available regarding hate crime are published within Hate crime statistics. These statistics on hate crimes recorded by the police and information on hate crime from the CSEW are published by the Home Office. Whilst not the latest release, in the Hate Crime, England and Wales, 2017 to 2018 publication, CSEW hate crime estimates were presented by ethnicity. Ethnic group is based on the 2011 Census definition of ethnic group which now includes Chinese in the Asian/Asian British group; therefore, we are not able to report on East Asian communities specifically. For more information see section 7.3 of the User Guide.

If you have any questions relating to the publications the Home Office can be contacted at: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk. They may be able to help you further with your request.
