Thank you for your request.

The Home Office produce an annual publication titled 'Hate Crime, England and Wales'. The 2019 to 2020 release was published on the 13 October 2020 which can be accessed via the following link: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/hate-crime-england-and-wales-2019-to-2020.

This publication includes figures from two main sources: the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime data. Appendix tables for the most recent release can also be found in the above link.

Appendix Table 1 provides a breakdown of police recorded hate crimes by police force area including the City of London and Metropolitan Police areas, by race and religion, for year ending March 2020. Appendix Tables 15 and 16 present data from the CSEW on the percentage of adults who were victims of racially-motivated and religion-motivated hate crime, respectively. These CSEW estimates are presented for all adults, and by ethnic group and religion for the three-year period to year ending March 2020, as well as 2015 to 2018, 2012 to 2015, 2009 to 2012 and 2007 to 2009.

The annual figures on hate crimes in England and Wales recorded by the police, by police force area are categorised by hate crime strand (including race and religion) and data for year ending March 2012 onwards can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/hate-crime-statistics. For more information, the Home Office can be contacted at crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

It should be noted that the CSEW question on whether an incident was motivated by race was first introduced in 1988 and has remained a separate question since then. Religiously motivated hate crime was asked in a separate question (in the year ending March 2006 and 2007 CSEW), but was merged with other hate crime strands in the year ending March 2008.
