I would like the change in the R&D and GVA across the different UK NUTS regions from 1993 to 2019. In the search page I was only able to find the data from 2003 onwards. Is there any way to find the data from the earlier years?

Thank you for your enquiry. We do not have the data you have requested for all years back to 1993.

The latest published data on regional gross value added (GVA) can be found in the Regional economic activity by gross domestic product, UK: 1998 to 2019 release published on 26 May 2021. Please note that we have recently moved from the NUTS classification of regional geography to a UK version called International Territorial Levels (ITL). The regions within are exactly the same as those used under the NUTS classification.

The latest published data on regional research and development (R&D) can be found in the Gross domestic expenditure on research and development, UK: 2018 release published on 2 April 2020. The regional R&D time series begins in 2001. The estimates are on a NUTS1 basis and are in a single Excel file with a worksheet for each year. From 2001 to 2010, the private non-profit sector was not available on a regional basis, so the NUTS1 breakdown of the all the sectors (business, government, higher education and private non-profit) begins in 2011.

Regional GVA (or GDP) estimates do exist for earlier years, but they are not consistent with the figures in the latest release and should not be used as a continuous time series. We do not know of any earlier estimates of regional R&D.
