You asked

How much does government contribute to patent development? For example, specific government programmes or projects that spin-off novel designs which have commercial applications.

Thank you for your request.

The UK Government invests in Research and Development (R&D), in 2015 the Government and Research Councils invested £11.4bn. The internationally agreed criteria stipulates that the money spent on R&D must be used to increase the stock of knowledge and to identify R&D use all of these elements should be present; Novel, Creative, Uncertain, Systematic and Reproducible. Government funding of R&D is set out in the UK government expenditure on science, engineering and technology.
