Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold the requested information for the whole of the UK. Should you wish to obtain Scottish or Northern Irish data, NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Our mortality data is taken from the information provided on death certificates.

The death certificate used in England and Wales is compatible with that recommended by World Health Organisation (WHO). It is set out in two parts. Part I gives the condition or sequence of conditions leading directly to death, while Part II gives details of any associated conditions that contributed to the death but are not part of the causal sequence.

All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or\ b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause code for Glioblastoma brain cancer is C71.9.

Part of the information you have requested part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice. Data is available from 2013- 2021.

Historic data can be found in the 21st Century and 20th Century mortality publications by searching by ICD-10 code C71.9.

We do not hold analysis of this ICD-10 code for 2022 yet, however we can produce this as a bespoke request using provisional data. This will be subject to change, to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths that have been referred for Coroner investigation. If the above does not meet your needs, or you would like analysis of ICD-10 code C71.9 as a contributory mention, this is available to request as bespoke analysis. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data are available to order via our bespoke pathway service. Bespoke data requests are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources, and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact the HALE customer Services team on Health.data@ons.gov.uk.
