FOI/2022/4426

You asked

Please can you provide the statistics and related raw data for the excess deaths covering January 2019 through to now (September 2022) including details of COVID-19 vaccination status?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with raw mortality and vaccination data this is personal information. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board (ONS) for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals can be identified, we find that Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.

However, we hold the following analysis, which looks at excess deaths from March 2020 to December 2021: Excess deaths in England and Wales. There is also an update to this publication looking at data from March 2020 to June 2022 Excess deaths in England and Wales: March 2020 to June 2022.

We have also published Excess deaths in England and Wales, 2020: Final - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) which looks at 2020 excess deaths against the five year average of 2015-2019 in England and Wales.

Please note these datasets provide excess deaths only and do not provide analysis by vaccination status.

We also hold the following analysis, Deaths by vaccination status, England, which looks at data from January 2021 to May 2022 which is the latest analysis available. The data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the Public Health Data Asset (PHDA) covers England only. We are currently in the process of updating this publication and this will be published in due course. All release dates are published on our Release Calendar.
