Thank you for your enquiry.

Table 1 of the dataset accompanying our Deaths Registered Weekly in England and Wales bulletin provides weekly comparisons of deaths registered in 2021 against 2020 deaths and the five-year average (2015-2019).

To access this, please click on the following link: Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales datasets.

Then, please download the spreadsheet beneath the heading '2021 edition of this dataset up to week ending 17 September 2021'.

Once you have opened this, please navigate to the tab called 'Weekly figures 2021'.

In this tab, you can find weekly mortality figures for 2021 in row 9. In rows 11 and 12, you can find weekly mortality figures for 2020 and the 5-year average (2015-2019) respectively.

To calculate crude excess deaths for 2021, please subtract the 5-year average, in row 12, from the figures in row 9. This can be done for the specific weeks of interest in July and August 2021.

To note, this publication is updated every Tuesday of the week. For excess deaths for the remaining months of 2021, this table can be accessed via the same link provided and the above process repeat to generate up-to-date figures.
