You asked

Do you release the figures of excess deaths in the UK (or England) from the outbreak of COVID-19 versus previous years?

We said

Thank you for your request.

We provide mortality statistics for England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland mortality statistics can be obtained from National Records Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistical Research Agency.

We published the following article on 5 June 2020: Analysis of death registrations not involving coronavirus (COVID19), England and Wales: 28 December 2019 to 1 May 2020. This report examines death registrations not involving coronavirus (COVID-19), to understand the apparent increase in deaths compared to the previous five-year average for deaths in the same weeks. The report also explores explanations for why a greater number of deaths not involving COVID-19 are observed.

With the exceptions of 2020 and 2019, a bespoke output of data is available via our ad hoc service.

If you would like to request bespoke data (for deaths registered up to 31st December 2018), this service falls outside of the Freedom of Information regime. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate.

If you would like to discuss your requirements further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
